Trials

The study will include three cluster randomized control trials (cRCTs) and one operational study (OR).

  • In Kenya, the AEGIS project will carry out an cRCT to evaluate protection against new malaria infections and ongoing transmission in populations where bed nets and indoor residual spraying are already in use. Specifically, the AEGIS team will evaluate the spatial repellent's efficacy, quantify whether it diverts mosquitoes to neighboring households, and assess its impact on insecticide resistance.
  • The second cRCT in Sri Lanka will evaluate how efficacious the spatial repellent is against new human Aedes-borne virus infections, primarily dengue.
  • The third cRCT in Mali will evaluate protection against new malaria infections and ongoing transmission in populations where bed nets and indoor residual spraying are already in use. Specifically, we will evaluate the spatial repellent's efficacy and assess its impact on insecticide resistance.
  • The OR study will be conducted in Uganda to evaluate effectiveness against malaria infections among displaced persons, where long-lasting insecticidal nets and/or indoor residual spraying often cannot be used because of the lack of permanent homes.
